It's as if he wanted to keep you hidden from us!" That would be an odd choice of phrase if Rina was Roku's daughter. Also, in "The Search" Azulon mentions that "We've had such trouble finding Avatar Roku's descendents. That prevents Ursa's side from being "icky". It certainly wouldn't have been as poetic if Iroh told him that "Avatar Roku's daughter's husband was also your great-grandfather." The point is undiminished that Zuko was descended from both men. (But probably not, since Rina also seems to have had Ursa as a late life child in the true Fire Nation nobility fashion, tho not icky sort.) Roku is not Zuko's maternal great-grandfather, even though that is what Iroh said verbatim in "The Avatar and the Fire Lord." I feel Iroh was being practical with the "You have more than one great-grandfather" line. There is at least one generation between Ursa's mother and Avatar Roku but their may be two. I remember somewhere that Iroh and Ozai had different mothers, but I was unable to verify it. Grey boxes represent non-benders and White boxes are characters whose bending status is unknown or unmentioned. A pink band means that person is The Avatar. The four color border being the United Republic. The band of color around each box is the nation that the character hails from/ displays citizenship toward. It was however dropped very quickly after being mentioned.)

(I'm not judging Toph BTW, I just think it's cool that Nick would let them display a nontraditional family.

Yes, Toph is canonically a single mother with two daughters to different men, crazy right. I debated making a Key, but I decided that almost everything was pretty self explanatory. In the end I figgured that Kana was as far back as we could trace the lineage, so I made it a joke. Nothing seemed to fit to me because Sokka and Katara are kind of SWT royalty but not, and Aang is re-founding the Air Nomads through Tenzin, but Sokka doesn't fit in that easily. I also kept changing my mind what to call Aang/Katara's family tree box. I debated putting Raava with Wan and Vaatu with Unalaq in a "Dark Avatar" Sub-box, but I decided against it.

(An almost throw-away line in "The Search" comic lends credence that non-benders cannot ascend the throne.)

I assume Azulon had elder siblings that got killed off, or weren't firebenders, unless conceiving your heir in your early 80's is commonplace for a Firelord, Ozai himself is a late-life child. Sadly, there is no incest in this family tree, but the fire nation family tree is kind of icky. I recently finished watching "Avatar: The Legend of Korra" Book Three, and wanted to create a family tree along the lines of the Targaryen family tree from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.
